One wonders how safe flying really is.
They always give the statistics as being per passenger mile, rather than per trip. And they never give the statistics for deaths per accident compared to injuries per accident!
Now Quantas, the Aussie airline that has never had an accident, had a chunk break off a 747 in flight, causing decompression in the passenger cabin.
747's might be getting a bit old now, I can remember as a teenager watching one take off from London Heathrow near where I lived at the time, and I am 61 now, so it is quite a few years ago.
The black box method of ensuring safety is interesting when you look at it another way.
It is like making cars with only 2 bolts holding the wheels on, and then after the first crash due to wheels coming off, make them with 3 bolts, or 4, or whatever.
Imagine if food were made that way.
You buy a choc bar, and all you get are a load of peanuts in a wrapper.
You complain, and then they add a little chocolate to it.
But they keep the peanuts, because peanuts are cheaper than chocolate.
